Kuramathi secures Travelife Gold once again

The successful merit comes after an in-depth audit of the resort’s contribution and effort towards sustainability. As this is the 3rd consecutive title conferred by the Travelife group; specific elements of the resort operations had to meet the stringent criteria of waste management, energy and water management, recycling to the welfare of staffing, etc.

Apart from being a splendid choice for honeymooners, families and food connoisseurs, the 1.8km resort island actively contributes to the environment and the natural surroundings thanks to the green initiatives and eco-conscious thinking integrated into the daily operations.

It is crucial to highlight some initiatives by the Eco Centre as well over the years that have been implemented and put into practice. At present, the food and beverage department is undergoing an innovative process to replace single-use plastic straws with biodegradable paper straws, and paper coasters are one project that has paved way for a significant change. Usage of home-made distilled, purified water in glass bottles tackles the consumption of plastic bottles; while electric buggies for commutation limits the utilization of fuel.

The progressive ideas adapt to the changing habits of the world and its major problems pertaining to climate change. As the world gears up for more conservative and sustainable measures to limit the carbon footprint and preserve the beauty of our planet; more and more research is done to play our part to educate, inspire and cultivate and harness the knowledge.

Recently; Kuramathi has also introduced coral-friendly sunscreen lotions to combat the damage of floating chemicals that is detrimental to coral growth. This is part of an intricate drive to encourage and foster guest’s support in using coral friendly products, to protect and upkeep our pristine surroundings.

Congratulations once again for the steadfast resolve wielded by the team members of Kuramathi!

Sweet delights of Kuramathi

This month, we feature some of our finest cakes on offer for our guests. Some are revamped
renditions of existing cakes recreated to suit the ambience of our tropical island.
Birthday cake: Heart or pebble-shaped, this vanilla cream cheesecake provides a rich, yummy
experience!

Screwpine Mousse Cake: A refined version of an authentic Maldivian delicacy, available at The Reef.
Wedding cake: The traditional cake fit for a romantic ceremony and as a sugary feast!

The croissant trilogy: Inspired by our Executive Pastry Chef Nicolas Descriaux – This is a delectable
a mix of the traditional croissant, (pairs perfectly with a cup of coffee), almond croissant with a vanilla
almond cream centre, and the innovative bi-coloured croissants flaunting aesthetic pleasure both in
and out!

And lastly, what steals the show is two entries from our fine dining Duniye restaurant. Firstly, the
cleverly coined ‘Acidulous Verbena Mouth Watering Ball’ a lightness, the right balance between
sweet and tangy flavours. Last but not the least; the aptly named ‘Lemongrass and Ginger Panna
Cotta with Aloe Vera Salsa’; a dessert dish created solely to tantalise the taste buds!

CARPE DIEM Maldives partners with LOLI WARE to bring the world’s first biodegradable and edible straw to the Maldives

Designed to disappear, manufacturing begins this month to create the healthy and refreshing straw you can eat.

Maldives, May 2018: It’s widely claimed there are enough plastic straws to wrap around the Earth’s circumference 2.5 times each day. Because they are so small, most straws are not recycled and usually end up in landfills and waterways, where they linger indefinitely, harming wildlife, and marring the natural beauty.

Made to disappear and designed to have the same functionality expected of a plastic straw, Lolistraw will last for up to 8 hrs in a beverage and will have a shelf life of up to 24 months. When you’re done sipping your drink, you can eat the straw or compost it.

The founders of LOLIWARE and the straw’s designers, Chelsea Briganti and Leigh Ann Tucker, have coined the term “Hyper-compostable” to convey that all of their products, including Lolistraw, will break down at the same rate as food waste in compost or in the natural environment, such as a waterway.

The Maldives is surrounded 99% by the ocean, straddles the equator and is home to some of the world’s most precious coral reefs and marine life. Considerations towards protecting the environment are a key influencer in all business decisions for Carpe Diem Maldives Pvt. Ltd.

“In 10 years of operating our dive safari cruises across The Maldives, we’re always looking for ways to reduce our waste footprint. For example, we’ve never had one-time use bottles on our boats, each guest receives a durable plastic water bottle that they take home with them,” explains Agnes van Linden, Assistant Managing Director of Carpe Diem Maldives Pvt. Ltd.

“When we were looking last year for new sustainable solutions to bring to our upcoming resort, I came across the Lolistraw project on Kickstarter. The management team and I carefully researched all the information and we all knew it was a winner. We had to seize the day and the opportunity, like our company name, while at the same time supporting this great innovation get off the ground.”

Carpe Diem Maldives is just one of two main Lolistraw Launch Partners from the Kickstarter project, with close to 1000 other smaller donation supporters.

“Our world needs a radically new approach to our daily consumption of single-use plastics which too often go to landfill or pollute oceans. Our solutions transform disposables into ‘’plant fuel’ through composting, or ‘human fuel’ through consumption,” observed LOLIWARE Co-Founder, Leigh Ann Tucker.

Seaweed

Made from a new seaweed-based material, the initial texture is like plastic but can be made with a flavour or with added nutrients. On Carpe Diem Cruises and at the upcoming resort, the chosen Lime flavour will add to the experience when sipping a cocktail, a simple glass of water or a refreshing coconut juice.

“It transforms while you’re using it to where you can actually bite into it afterwards and eat it,” Leigh Ann Tucker noted. “But when you first pick it up and put it into your drink, it’s going to feel like a plastic straw.”

For those who don’t want to eat the straw, it’s also compostable and marine degradable. Unlike another material often used for compostable utensils–PLA, which is often made from corn starch–Loliware breaks down easily, so it can be composted in a home system rather than requiring industrial composting equipment. If the seaweed-based straw happens to end up in the ocean, it will dissolve, which is excellent news for the pristine waters of The Maldives, and any unassuming hungry marine life that might be swimming by.

“We’re not telling the consumer, hey, you can’t have your straw. We’re providing them with a solution to the plastic straw crisis while also giving them a fun experience on top of that. It’s not about the consumer sacrificing anymore, it’s about the consumer having fun and being sustainable at the same time. There are some bioplastics that just break down into smaller pieces, whereas Lolistraw is designed to literally disappear,” says Chelsea Briganti.

The lime-flavoured Lolistraws will available in August on all three Carpe Diem Cruises offering 7 and 10-day dive safaris while staying on the luxury liveaboard vessels, as well as at the 115-pool villa Carpe Diem Beach Resort & Spa when it opens in September this year.

Behind the scenes with the bakery and pastry team of Kuramathi Maldives

With a total of 13 restaurants nestled on a 1.8km island, Kuramathi Maldives is renowned for variety in cuisine, especially with a value added All Inclusive plans. Catering mostly to guests from around the world, Kuramathi has created unique dining experiences with seasonal promotions at the different à la carte restaurants. And with this new year, the resort has plans to introduce new flavourful chapters for eager food aficionados.

This month, we would like to highlight the success story of a closely knit team that provides fresh, homemade bread to our belt of restaurants. Early risers would get a whiff of the desirable scent trailed by hot bread and warm croissants created fresh by our dedicated bakery team. Their relentless work ethic has paved way to introduce a robust choice ranging from the classic French baguette to different Italian ciabatta and German breads such as black forest, pumpernickel to the signature styled purple sweet corn and cranberry bread; the brainchild of our French chefs.

It is no doubt that in today’s world, the French baguette is a quintessential food item of France. Like wine, beret or cheese, it has become a symbol. The crust of the baguettes is crispy and golden brown, while on the inside, soft, chewy and honeycombed. We are proud to feature the same consistency in the French baguettes served on Kuramathi; a somewhat remarkable piece of France on a tropical island.
