Sangu Sundown Ritual

The “Sangu” shell, a traditional Maldivian instrument, is commonly employed in local islands to summon and gather the community. In the event of a public announcement, the “Pionu” or island administrator would blow the “Sangu” shell from four opposite points of the island. Islanders would then gather at a designated location, typically the island office, where the island chief would address the community. This practice is used to initiate a celebration, convey messages from the central government office, and warn of any imminent danger or emergency (such as a dhoni in distress or a fire outbreak). During the holy month of Ramadan, the signal for the final meal before fasting is called “Dhan’beru,” and the “Sangu” shell is also used to alert the community.

At Banyan Tree Vabbinfaru, the Sangu call is a ritual performed every evening at sundown, during the transition from day to night.

Join our Marine Lab team and become a part of our reef restoration program where we aim to plant artificial reefs that closely resemble natural reef habitats.
