Conrad Maldives Rangali Island announced today the submersion of what is believed to be the world’s first undersea residence, which will be completed in the fourth quarter of 2018. The result of a significant $15 million USD investment, this revolutionary concept will transform the Maldives experience for travelers who want to be truly immersed within the natural beauty of the Indian Ocean. Aptly named THE MURAKA or coral in Dhivehi, the local language of the Maldives, the undersea residence gives guests an intimate and immersive experience of one of the Earth’s most breathtaking marine environments. Muraka is designed to blend into its environment, giving guests’ unparalleled views of the Indian Ocean at every turn. With vibrant colors and a diverse array of marine life all around, Muraka’s residents will be able to sleep alongside the wonders of the abundant and colorful marine life that inhabit the sea.

“Driven by our inspiration to deliver innovative and transformative experiences to our global travelers, the world’s first undersea residence encourages guests to explore the Maldives from an entirely new perspective below the surface of the sea,” said Ahmed Saleem, a Director at Crown Company and chief architect and designer of the undersea residence. “THE MURAKA marks our second venture in underwater architecture and technology, next to Ithaa Undersea Restaurant, which is celebrating its 13th anniversary this month. Through our rich history of being a trailblazer in innovative luxury hospitality, we are proud to remain at the forefront of cutting-edge design, technology and architecture.”

The deck, anchored on the end of the villa, is perfect for watching the sunrise

Envisioned by Crown Company Director Ahmed Saleem, and realized by Mike Murphy, leading engineer at M J Murphy Ltd., a New Zealand-based company that specializes in aquarium technology, the undersea residence is a two-level structure comprised of space above the sea level and an undersea suite designed for sleeping under the ocean’s surface. The undersea suite features a king size bedroom, living area, bathroom and spiral staircase that leads to the upper level living room. The undersea bedroom floor level sits five meters (16.4 feet) below sea level, providing uninterrupted views of the surrounding marine environment. With the adoption of state-of-the-art technology, Muraka’s distinct design is akin to Ithaa’s with the curved acrylic dome, which boasts 180-degree panoramic views of the wonders of the Indian Ocean’s intricate marine life.

In total, Muraka can accommodate up to nine guests.

Fushifaru Maldives introduces Indigenous Maldivian guest experiences

From climbing coconut trees to boduberu drumming, discover your inner explorer

One of the Maldives’ newest boutique resorts, Fushifaru Maldives, located on the far North East border of Faadhippolhu Atoll, more popularly known as Lhaviyani Atoll, made waves with a first-of-its-kind arrival ritual by welcoming all guests to the island with the blowing of the Sangu or Sea Conch (a significant aspect of Maldivian cultural history, the Sangu was traditionally used by village elders to call the community to attention for important announcements), thus marking the first of a collection of indigenous Maldivian experiences available at the resort.

Diversifying the Coconut

For guests looking to channel their inner Robinson Crusoe, learn to climb a Coconut Tree at our Coconut Tree Climbing Masterclass – a solid 99 minutes of laughter-filled bonding with one of the many beautiful coconut trees on the island, all supervised by an experienced member of our recreation team. COCONUT WATER POP-UP - IMAGE CREDIT FUSHIFARU MALDIVESLearning to scale the smooth, sturdy trunk barefoot or with a piece of strong cloth gives beginners a great sense of accomplishment, not to mention fantastic photos! Climbing trees is a staple skill amongst the islanders to gather coconuts and palm fronds for making everything from twine and baskets to mats and fans and to harvest fruits, leaves and spices that typify traditional Maldivian cuisine. Guests will also get to see the fruits of their labour, taking home their very own island-made mats and baskets.

Guests are also invited to experience other interactive activities, from toddy tapping and milking of coconuts to the making of pure coconut oil. They can also try their hand at weaving traditional Maldivian rope using the coir of dried coconut husks, as well as Cadjan weaving using dried coconut leaves – essentially making the roofs over their villas!

Boduberu Beat

For guests who are more musically inclined, Fushifaru’s Boduberu Beat session gives them a chance to try their hand at playing the boduberu drum made traditionally from the trunk of the coconut tree. This traditional Maldivian instrument bears influence from the music in East and Southwest Africa that was brought to the islands by sailors from the Indian Ocean around the 11th century.

BODUBERU MASTERCLASS - IMAGE CREDIT FUSHIFARU MALDIVESStarting first with steady rhythms before gaining tempo and reaching a loud, festive and exhilarating crescendo that is referred to as “vibrating the island”, the session also features dancers who will accompany guests by jumping, swaying and singing along to the music. The interactive, energetic nature of Boduberu Beat makes for a great workout and an immersive Maldivian music experience for all ages.

Maldivian Cooking Class

For gastronomes and those curious about the culinary arts of the local islands, the resort offers a hands-on Maldivian Cooking Class on Maldivian Tuna Curry, Mashuni – a staple Maldivian salad of tuna flakes, chopped onions, tomatoes, chilli and a sprinkle of lime, accompanied by steaming hot Roshi – Maldivian flatbread.

Fushi Trail and Faru Discovery

TRADITIONAL MALDIVIAN EXPERIENCES - IMAGE CREDIT FUSHIFARU MALDIVESA conservationist’s favourite, guests will be guided by the resort’s Resident Explorer to discover and learn about the diverse flora and fauna that make this exquisite little island a wonder both above and below the waterline. This includes spotting the island’s two Resident rabbits! Occasionally, guests may even be treated to a mother turtle laying her eggs right outside a villa. As custodians of conservation, each guest is encouraged to contribute in any small way to saving the planet, all whilst enjoying the wonders of idyllic island life.

Villa Amenities

Designed to amplify the joys of island life at Fushifaru, each guest villa offers servings of Athujehi – spicy fish chips famously made on the neighbouring local island of Hinnavaru,

FRESHLY SCRAPPED COCONUT FLESH - IMAGE CREDIT FUSHIFARU MALDIVESKaashi – coconut meat often accompanied with dried tuna, Theluli Bambukeyo – breadfruit chips usually served at a housewarming, and Laagulha – Molucca bean which is also used as traditional medicine. Not forgetting our Very Important Kids, children will also receive traditional toys including Madhoshi – red sandalwood seeds usually collected by local island children to play games with, and Boli – cowrie shells that were used as the first form of currency in the Maldives.

Merging quintessential Maldivian design with modern aesthetics in its 49 beach and water villas; Fushifaru Maldives is an ideal escape for adventurers, conservationists and traditionalists.

Oil Aboard the Coconut Express at Outrigger Konotta Maldives Resort

The health and beauty benefits of locally produced coconut oil feature in a special massage offer from the Navasana Spa at the Outrigger in the Maldives

Navasana Coconut Oil Photo
Pride of the island: Konotta’s own coconut oil, made for health and beauty, is among the locally produced items at the resort’s Outrigger Trading Company shop

This April, the Navasana Spa at Outrigger Konotta Maldives Resort celebrates one year of producing its own coconut oil on the island. The coconut oil is all-natural 100% pure, made by the spaís therapists who hand press it from the naturally fallen mature coconuts around the island.

The oil is used in an increasing number of treatments at the resortís Navasana Spa. It is also popular with guests as a healthy product to take home.

The oil is rich in fibres, vitamins and minerals. It can be applied externally or ingested to achieve various beauty, health and comfort benefits.

It takes approximately 50 mature, fallen coconuts to make 2.5 litres of pure coconut oil. Over the last year, the staff has perfected the process which involves gathering, dehusking and shredding the coconuts. They then squeeze the milk-juice from the grated coconut and discard the residue.

The spa staff then chill the coconut milk overnight or until it sets. The top solid layer is gently removed, cooked on constant heat, stirring until the oil separates and is clear. It is then bottled. Itís a two-day process.

“We’re getting better at it all the time,” says Amanda Burleigh, spa manager at the Outrigger. “We can now produce beautiful clear oil to a very consistent high quality.”

That liquid gold has numerous benefits when ingested or applied to the body.

As a beauty treatment well-refined coconut oil nourishes hair, acts as a natural makeup remover or facial night cream. It can be used as a body moisturiser, as an after-shave balm, and for soothing skin exposed to too much sun.

As a well-being treatment, good quality coconut oil, when consumed, is a great source of healthy fats, can increase absorption of calcium and magnesium and can improve sleep patterns. When used in food it supports healthy thyroid function. Applied topically, the oil is said to have a benign affect on mosquito bites and acne.

For babies, children and pregnant mums, coconut oil is a good diaper cream and a natural baby lotion. It can be applied to limit stretch marks. Ingesting a couple of tablespoons a day may increase a motherís milk supply.

Indigenous Konotta coconut oil is proving popular with visitors to the resort. They take it home as a souvenir for US$18 for a 100 ml bottle or US$32 for 250 ml.

“The hosts at the spa take great pride in manufacturing a popular product that reflects the best of our beautiful island,” says Amanda.

The coconut oil is one of a handful of new products now being produced on Konotta (“coconut”) island by Outrigger hosts, using only local Maldivian ingredients.

Wine socks

Apart from the Navasana Spa coconut oil, the Outrigger Trading Company shop also retails popular “wine sock” coasters that fit over the base of stemmed wine glasses to absorb condensation. These are produced by the resort’s creative tailor.

International Maldives Travel Market 2018 officially launched

IMTM Pvt Ltd. in association with Adaaran Resorts officially launched the International Maldives Travel Market 2018 (IMTM 2018) at ITB Berlin 2018 this month. The event is set to be held at Adaaran Select Hudhuranfushi Resort, Maldives, from June 23-24, 2018.

IMTM 2018 is set to be the first international travel and trade fair to be held at a resort in Maldives. It is designed to accommodate close to 50 DMCs representative of 20 countries spread throughout 5 continents. Furthermore, it is also set to be able to accommodate 200 participants from the local tourism industry.

Mr. Mohamed Farshath, the Managing Director of IMTM Pvt Ltd. commenting on the objective of IMTM 2018 stated, “We are hosting an International Travel and Trade Fair in Maldives that seeks to provide a cost-effective internal platform which can garner a major collective industry presence consisting of all 5 sectors (Resorts, Hotels, Liveaboards, Guesthouses and Tour Operators/Travel Agencies) for international buyers to meet with.”

Conventionally, Maldives has been promoted in trade and travel fairs and exhibitions – overseas – through participation of industry stakeholders. However, findings by IMTM Pvt Ltd. indicated that “most of the Maldivian tourism stakeholders do not attend International Travel and Trade Fairs as a major collective. Major trade fairs such as ITB Berlin (Germany), ATM (Arabian Travel Market) and World Travel Market (WTM) (UK) are the only 3 exceptions which consist of a widespread industry presence year after year with participation numbers exceeding 100. Even then, high costs of participation do not ensure a proportional representation between Resorts, Liveaboards, Guesthouses and Tour Operators/Travel Agencies,” added Farshath.

According to the organizers of the event, one of the key aspects of IMTM 2018 is the provision of a semi-formal setting by hosting the exhibition in a pristine tropical resort in the Maldives, thus allowing exhibitors and delegates to indulge in a true Maldivian holiday experience before, during and after the official exhibition dates.

Registration for exhibitors and hosted buyers is now open for IMTM 2018 with the deadline set as April 6, 2018.

First Ice Rink in the Maldives opened by Russian Olympic Gold Medalist

Jumeirah Vittaveli inaugurated the first ice rink in the Maldives with a celebrity performance by Russian Evgeni Plushenko, a former Olympic Gold medallist figure skater.

Jumeirah Vittaveli Ice Rink LaunchThe eco-friendly ice skating rink Ice Ice Maybe… is a world first to the Maldives and the 87 square meters offers plenty of space for pirouettes and ice hockey games.

Ice Ice Maybe - Jumeirah VittaveliAmit Majumder, General Manager, Jumeirah Vittaveli, said: “I congratulate the entire team for introducing a world-first to the Maldives. This eco-friendly ice skating rink on a tropical island is a true expression of our aim to ‘wow’ our guests, not just with genuine service from the heart but with innovative additions to our resort that provide extraordinary experiences to the adventurous traveller.

Ice Ice Maybe JV“An immense thank you also goes to the inimitable Evgeni Plushenko – we are honoured that such a world-class skater and enthralling performer as Evgeni was the first to leave his mark on our rink. I look forward to seeing the many happy guests when they try out our beachside ice rink while looking out over the ocean.”

The grand finale to the launch event was Evgeni Plushenko’s performance, he was later joined by his wife Yana Rudkovskaya and his 5-year-old son Aleksandr Plushenko, an ice skating wonderkid.

The country’s first ice skating rink Ice Ice Maybe… at Jumeirah Vittaveli has been manufactured using Glice®, a novel material from Switzerland that allows for eco-friendly ice rinks, eliminating the need to keep the ice rink cold. This enables guests to experience a world-first at Jumeirah Vittaveli when they go for a swim in the crystal clear waters of the Indian Ocean, followed by a quick stroll across the beach to put on their ice skates and glide along the picturesque backdrop of a tropical winter wonderland.

The rink will be open from 12 – 6pm daily and access costs at USD 75 which includes 2 hours of ice skating, rental of equipment, a delicious ice cream sundae to enjoy post ice skating and a host of giveaways and souvenirs. All following entries will be charged at USD 50 and include gear and an ice cream sundae. The rink will be open for all ages, children below 8 years of age will need to be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

Jumeirah Vittaveli offers romantic escapes as well as a variety of land- and water-based activities, including a PADI Dive base, water sports centre, six restaurants and bars, and two lounges; an underground tasting room and a wine library will be opened soon. With its focus on cultural connection and organic experiences in a luxurious setting, Jumeirah Vittaveli offers guests a true Maldivian island experience.
