Per AQUUM resort announced the appointment of Marc Gussing as General Manager of Huvafen Fushi and Dietmar Koegerl as General Manager of NIYAMA.
Marc Gussing, a Swedish national, speaks four languages including English, basic Spanish, Swedish, and French. Before completing his schooling in hotel management in Switzerland and after completion, Marc’s career took him across world to the Maldives, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Indonesia, Seychelles, Israel, France, Monaco, the United Kingdom, Switzerland and the United States of America.
After having held the role of Director of Operations at Huvafen Fushi in 2005, Marc is famous in Per AQUUM. “To have the opportunity to come back and lead this exceptional property is incredible. Many of the original team members are still here and it really feels like I’ve come home. The Asian Surfing Championships in cooperation with the Maldives Surfing Association and the Maldives Body Boarding Association has revealed the addition of the inaugural Maldives Open 2014 to the 2014 ASC tour schedule as an ASC Grade 3 event with a total prize purse of $15,000 over the three divisions of Men’s Open, Women’s, and Body Boarding.
The event is scheduled take place from 3-7 September at Lohis Point and will be hosted by the Adaaran Select Hudhuranfushi Resort.

The idea for the Maldives Open 2014 first pitched to the Maldives Minister of Tourism Mr. Ahmed Adeeb easly this year by Abdulla “Fuku” Areef, the president of the Maldives Body Boarding Association. The idea then was accepted by the Minister Adeeb with request that MBBA as the local event organizer and the ASC as the international sanctioning organization sign a 5-year MOU (Memorandum of Understanding), to ensure the goals of growing the sport of surfing and body boarding in the Maldives by having annual events are accomplished.
With the cooperation of the Maldives Surfing Association, co-organizer and the national governing body of surfing, the MOU was signed in Malé on Tuesday July 8th by Maldives Tourism Minister Adeeb, Tim Hain (ASC) and Abdulla Areef (MBBA), at the premise of the Ministry.
Before the signing, ASC General Manager Tim Hain, in his speech thanked Minister Adeeb for his vision, commitment and support of surfing in the Maldives, the entire Asian region, then thanked the MBBA and the MSA for their hard work in bringing this event to fruition after years of effort.
Minister Adeeb informed his goal for funding the event in support of surfing and body boarding in the Maldives, mainly is to provide more opportunities for the local youth in water sports, promote the Maldives as a surfing tourism destination, and to finally encourage the exploration and discovery of new surf spots in the islands for development.
The Maldives Open 2014 is a Ministry of Tourism of Maldives funded event with the Adaaran Select Hudhuranfushi Resort as the host and a primary sponsor, Maldives Body Boarding Association and the Maldives Surfing Association as co-organizers, and. The Dubai-based luxury hotelier – Jumeirah Group and a member of Dubai Holding appointed David Stepetic as the new General Manager of Jumeirah Dhevanafushi, taking the role over from Chris Ely who returned to Dubai to begin the role of Hotel Manager at Jumeirah Beach Hotel, Dubai, United Arab Emirates.
Chris, a British national, joined Jumeirah in 2005 working in Sports & Leisure for a number of our hotels and resorts in Dubai. In 2007, he was promoted to a Director’s role with the Development team, working on many development projects in Dubai.
In 2010, Chris was the first Jumeirah team member to join the pre-opening team of Jumeirah Dhevanafushi as Director of Operations, overseeing Rooms, Food & Beverage, Spa, Engineering and Housekeeping. Two years later being promoted to General Manager, ever since he established a strong team on the island and successfully led the operations at the resort.
Before joining Jumeirah, Chris worked as a manager for Holmes Place, a private Health Club in London. In his new role as Hotel Manager, which will be effective from 23 July 2014, Chris will support Mahmoud Sakr, General Manager, Jumeirah Beach Hotel with the day-to-day operations of the hotel.
David, an American national, joined Jumeirah from Laucala Island Resort in Fiji where he was the General Manager for the past two years.
David’s hotel industry experience extends over 26 years, 19 of them were with Four Seasons Hotels & Resorts in the Tokyo, the United States and the Maldives where he held a number of senior roles in the areas of Food and Beverage and Banqueting.
In his new post, David will lead the team and continue to build on the success and upholding the reputation of the award-winning resort in the Maldives.

Explorer is accredited with international certification from Australia, a leader in the field of vocational education.
