Prohibited vs. Restricted Imports to the Maldives

Some items are completely banned from entry into the Maldives, regardless of purpose, and will be confiscated at the border. Others are allowed only with permits or within strict limits.

Prohibited Items

These are items that are absolutely forbidden from being brought into the Maldives, for either personal use or commercial purposes. They will be confiscated upon arrival.

  • Alcoholic Beverages: It is illegal to bring any form of alcohol into the Maldives, even if purchased at a duty-free shop. However if you are going to a resort, alcohol will be available at the resort.
  • Pork and Pork Products: Due to religious dietary laws, the import of pork and its by-products is strictly prohibited. However, pork dishes are available at resorts.
  • Pornographic Material: This includes any literature, videos, or other items considered to be pornographic or sexually explicit.
  • Idols of Worship: Items of religious worship for non-Islamic faiths are not permitted.
  • Narcotics and Psychotropic Substances: The import of illegal drugs is strictly prohibited, and penalties are severe. Remember this includes marijuana as well.
  • Firearms, Explosives, and Ammunition: Weapons, including firearms, explosives, and their components, are banned.

Restricted Items

These items may be imported, but they require a special permit, a valid prescription, or must adhere to specific quantity limits.

  • Medication: Most personal medication is permitted, but just in case, you must carry a doctor's prescription that clearly states your name, the medication, and the dosage.
  • Tobacco Products: As of late 2024, import regulations on tobacco products have become more stringent. While tourists are permitted to bring a limited quantity (200 cigarettes, 25 cigars, or up to 250g of tobacco) , any amount exceeding these limits will be retained by customs and can be collected when you departure.
  • Vaping Products: A ban on the import, sale, and possession of all vaping devices and accessories came into effect in late 2024. Travellers arriving with a vape device will have it confiscated at the border. However, it will be returned to you when you leave the Maldives.
  • Professional Equipment: If you are bringing a large amount of photographic or diving equipment, it is advisable to inform your resort or have a detailed list with serial numbers to avoid delays at customs.
