My First Time Night Snorkelling in the Maldives

This might be the scariest thing I've done this year: venturing out into the ocean at night with just a few lights—well, that and three water sports guides by my side.

There are two main types of night snorkelling. The first involves taking a regular light and exploring the ocean at night to observe corals and marine life in their nocturnal habitat. The second type, which I chose, uses fluorescent lights to reveal the incredible phenomenon of bioluminescence—watching marine creatures and corals glow in the darkness.

Before we entered the water, our experienced guides thoroughly briefed us on safety measures. They divided our group into teams of three, with one guide assigned to each team. Throughout the experience, the guides would periodically check on us using the universal "OK" hand sign, and we were instructed to respond with the same gesture if everything was fine.

Each participant received a standard diving light for navigation and swimming, but the real magic came from the special fluorescent lights that would reveal the ocean's hidden glow.

Once everything was set, we ventured into the ocean. After swimming past the shallow lagoon area to reach the island's house reef, we switched from our regular diving lights to the fluorescent ones and put on our masks.

That's when something magical happened.

At first glance, I honestly saw what looked like a bunch of "glowing rocks." But as my eyes adjusted, I began noticing rocks that appeared brighter. The experience progressively intensified, and just when I thought it couldn't get any better, we started encountering the small marine creatures. And when you see them glowing in the darkness, it's truly mind-blowing!

While we maintained a safe distance from the fish, I never expected to be so mesmerised by their glow. The entire underwater world transformed into something otherworldly—sort of like a constellation beneath.

I believe night snorkelling is one of the most underrated experiences in the Maldives that few visitors get to try. While everyone talks about daytime snorkelling, sunset cruises, and diving as must-do activities, night snorkelling offers something truly unique.

If you're looking for an extraordinary experience unlike any other, I highly recommend opting for a night snorkel. For those who are certified divers, a night dive would be even more spectacular.

Where to Try Night Snorkelling in the Maldives

I had my night snorkelling experience at Dhigali Maldives, a resort I can recommend to couples and small families without hesitation. After doing some research, I discovered that several other resorts (as above) also offer night snorkelling as part of their excursion packages.

Resorts that Offer Night Snorkelling

Here are some Maldives resorts where you can experience night snorkelling. Additionally, any resort with a Prodivers dive centre will offer this activity as part of their excursion packages.

Preparation Before Night Snorkelling

If you're planning to go night snorkelling in the Maldives, make sure you follow proper safety procedures.

  • If you're not staying at a resort but rather on a local island, choose a reputable water sports centre with experienced guides.
  • Pay close attention to the instructions from your water sports guides to ensure you understand all the safety measures before entering the water.
  • Consider your swimming ability and comfort level in open water, especially in low-light conditions, before booking the experience.
